For those of you following baseball around New Castle County, you certainly have seen the parity that exists this season. I still stick to my prediction that a public school will take the crown this year, but it’s anything but a lock. St Marks and Caravel still seem to be notch above the rest, but not by a lot, at least this year.
The early season player of the year in my opinion is Brandon Walters at Hodgson. I watched him no hit St Georges with 12Ks. He followed that up with a 10K performance against Middletown. The only blemish on Hodgson’s record is a blowout loss to St Marks, but Walters did not pitch that game. When “Walt” is on the hill, it’s going to be tough to score against the Silver Eagles. They should continue to roll when he’s starting.
Caravel was rolling along as the clear favorite, until they fell apart in the bottom of the 7th against Charter. They lost in walk off fashion 4-3. Classic game they just couldn’t put away. Letting Charter hang around up 3-1 in the 7th. A couple of walks, a couple of mental and physical errors, led to a clutch hit by the Force in the bottom of 7th. To give them an upset victory against the Bucs. Charter then followed up that emotional high, with an emotional low. Getting blasted by Middletown at Frawley Stadium a couple of days later. Middletown looked great in that outing, as Colin Peluse tossed a NoNo with 11ks in 5 innings of a shortened game.
St. Marks Update
St Marks had a great comeback Victory over St E’s. Down 3-0 in the 6th, they won 4-3. They also cruised past Archmere, before falling to Conrad 4-1. That gave St Marks their first loss as well. It may also have been a preview of the drama that may unfold in the tournament. As the state may see some new faces and some big upsets in the tourney. However, St Marks is battle tested and still has a clear advantage over most teams.
A.I. had an interesting two games. Playing Smyrna on a windy day at Tiger stadium, they ended up giving up 4 homeruns, losing 14-2. The Tigers followed that up in the opening round of the Tiger Classic against St E’s falling behind 12-1. However, Darren Brodie and his group showed great resolve after being outscore 26-2 in 10 innings over two games. The Tigers dropped a 10 spot in the bottom of the fifth, to eventually pull out the Victory 16-15 and advance to the finals to play St. Georges.
Some big games to watch this upcoming week starting on Tuesday April 14th. St Marks and Caravel battle at 7:00 under the lights at Caravel. St Georges will play at Mount Pleasant, who’s a quiet 3-0, and Appo plays undefeated Dover as well.
