The High school season is coming to its midpoint, and we have seen the stronger teams starting to separate themselves from the pack.
1. Caravel 9-3
Caravel has settled in, and is leading the way with wins over two top five teams in St. Marks and Hodgson. More importantly, Caravel gave Hodgson their first loss with Walters on the hill. Walters was still his usual self with 13ks and no earned runs. Although in Caravel fashion, the Bucs were able to manufacture 2 unearned runs in route to a 2-0 win.
However, Caravel did just drop another surprising upset loss to Sussex Central to prove no one is really that far ahead of the rest. At 9-3, the Bucs still are the lead dog to this point.
2. St. Marks 9-2
St. Marks, and the state, got some good news as the return of Billy Phillips seems to be coming soon. I am so impressed with his desire and perseverance through this tough time in his life. He will surely be a great addition to the team physically, and more importantly as a leader and inspiration for anyone both on his team and off. Life is about overcoming adversity, and Billy has taken this battle head on, and he’s winning. Good Luck on your return!
The Spartans continue to play and beat quality opponents as they downed Appo in extra innings this week as well and sit 9-2 and await the return of their star.
3. Hodgson 11-2
Hodgson sits at 11-2, as they were saddled with a loss against top ranked Caravel with their ace on the hill. Their schedule sets up nicely for the remainder of the season, and I expect them to finish in the top 5. As well as getting a nice seed in the tourney.
4. Dover 9-2
Dover dropped their first game of the season to a Sussex Tech, and followed that up with a loss to Polytech. Still, the Senators are putting together a real nice season. Dover was battle tested last year in the tourney, so I expect them to finish strong and make some noise in the tourney as well.
5. Appoquinimink 10-3
Appo rounds out the top five. They currently hold a 10-3 record, with those losses to other teams I my top 5; Hodgson, Dover, and St Marks. They will be tested over the next several weeks. They have games against Caravel, and Flight A foes in Charter, Mount, and William Penn. All have the capabilities of knocking off anyone at any time.
Some Schools to Watch
Archmere 7-2 with a really light schedule until the last two games Hodgson and Towerhill.
The Sals are playing some good baseball with wins over St Georges and Towerhill, and a narrow defeat against St Marks. With a favorable schedule the rest of the way, I expect them to sneak into contention by year’s end. They currently sit at 7-3.
Sussex tech deserves some consideration at 10-2. They have a nice win over Dover, but a bad loss to Cape. They will be tested with games against St Marks and Poly on the horizon.
The tourney will offer some real interesting participants this year with a chance for some upsets in every round.
