Baseball Playing Experience
Matt was a 3 sport athlete at Glasgow High School. He excelled on the baseball field earning All-Conference and All-State honors. He still holds the single season record for hits at Glasgow High school. Matt went on to become a two sport athlete at Delaware State University, playing football and baseball. After two years, Matt decided to focus on baseball and ended up being a 3 year starter in the outfield for the Division I Hornets. In 2003, Matt was one of the leading hitters for DSU.
After college, Matt competed for Canada Dry in the Delaware Semi Pro league and in 2007, won the Delaware Semi Pro batting title. It is also noteworthy that in 2010 and 2011 he had a stint playing quarterback in the professional AIFA arena football league for the Baltimore Mariners.
Baseball Coaching/Teaching Experience
As a Physical Education Teacher at George Read Middle School, Matt began his formal coaching baseball and basketball in 2006 while also offering individual personal batting lessons. From 2011-2013 he was an Assistant Coach at William Penn High school. In the 2014 season, Matt became the Head Coach at William Penn, guiding them to a 9-9 record, which was the best record the team had earned in the prior 7 years. He is currently a varsity baseball coach at Charter of Wilmington.
Baseball Coaching Philosophy
Matt loves the game of baseball and has a passion for teaching kids how to play the game the right way with using excellent fundamentals, passing on his love for the game to the players as well as helping boys become men of character on and off the field. When not coaching baseball: Matt enjoys spending time with his wife, Suzanne and their daughter, Amala. During the summer months, Matt plays for the Nationals in the Judy Johnson Wilmington Baseball league. Some of Matt’s hobbies include lifting weights, reading, playing recreational sports, skiing and traveling.
